Spirit of Sustainability in Sarah Winchester's Home

April 21, 2025

Janan Boehme, Winchester Mystery House Historian

San Jose was recently chosen as one of the top-ten eco-conscious cities in the U.S., Greenest Cities in America (2025). Though you may think of ecological awareness as a modern phenomenon, it’s been around for a long time. Let’s look at what was going on in California during Sarah Winchester’s lifetime, and see how she fit into the ecological picture after moving here.

In 1851, when Sarah was a young girl of 12 growing up in New Haven, Conn., Americans were already pushing the government to preserve national forestlands.¹ Many were furious in 1852, when a 2,500-year-old giant redwood, named “Mother of the Forest,” was stripped of its bark in California (in what would later become Yosemite National Park) so its shell could be reconstructed and displayed in New York and London.

The tree, deprived of its protective bark, ultimately died. New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley condemned the act as “vandalism.” A few years later, Greeley toured the west and was stunned by the beauty of the Yosemite Valley, which he called “the most unique and majestic of nature’s marvels.”²

In 1864, two years after Sarah married William Winchester, California Senator John Conness introduced a bill in Congress aimed at protecting the Yosemite Valley. The bill was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln in June of that year. By the time the widowed Sarah bought her ranch in California’s Santa Clara Valley in 1886, the state’s ancient and majestic old-growth redwoods were being ruthlessly clearcut to build rapidly growing towns and cities, and many Californians started to worry about their survival.

By 1899, Sarah had been in the Santa Clara Valley for about 13 years. Andrew P. Hill—a San Jose landscape painter and photographer who had taken a studio portrait of Sarah’s niece Marion, as well as one of Sarah’s beloved dog Zip—was commissioned to photograph a grove of old-growth redwoods in Felton, about 30 miles southwest of Sarah’s San Jose home. Hill was so amazed by the ancient giants, and so appalled at the thought of them becoming building lumber and railroad ties that he vowed to save as many as he could.

He invited some influential Bay Area citizens to go camping with him in the “Big Basin” area of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and the result was the creation of the Sempervirens Club, whose motto was “Save the Redwoods.” Its members worked tirelessly—and successfully—to turn Big Basin into California’s first state park.³
Sadly, by that time, only about 25% of California’s old-growth redwoods remained.

Fund-raising was key to Sempervirens’ success, and Hill encouraged Sarah to contribute to the cause. She gave $500—a generous contribution even today, and a very large sum indeed back at the turn of the last century!

Although the buildings on Sarah’s estate—including the mansion—were built of redwood (the go-to lumber in California) her fruit ranch did contribute to the ecological health of the valley. Her ranch was part of a vast agricultural empire that supplied fruits and vegetables to the rest of the country, as well as other parts of the world. She had more than 100 acres under cultivation with prune, apricot, and walnut trees, and she also created a lush 18-acre botanical garden around the mansion. This densely planted acreage created a natural carbon sink, pulling unhealthy carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and pumping oxygen back into it!

Sarah also had systems in place that helped replenish the valley’s water table (a vast underground aquifer that supplied water for the valley’s wells and orchards). Her builders created a complex gutter and drainage system that collected the rainwater that fell on and around the mansion, as well as the excess water from houseplants that were watered in her specially designed North and South Conservatories, and on her balconies and terraces. Water was carried away from the mansion through a maze of pipes (saving the foundation from rot and subsidence), funneled through a series of brick-lined catch-basins, and eventually into dry wells around the estate. From these, it could percolate back down into the water table—a beautiful recycling system!

Three different “catch basins” routing water under Sarah’s estate.

Finally, Sarah and her workers never wasted building materials. After the 1906 earthquake, for example, when the top 4 floors of the house were taken down, the leaded windows, doors, decorative elements, finials, clapboard, beadboard wall panels, framing, etc, from these rooms were used to build new sections of the house in the years that followed. Materials that were not re-used were kept in storage for later projects. To this day, whenever possible, we use Sarah’s old building materials for restoration projects in the mansion and on the estate. And to this day, Sarah’s estate, though much smaller, remains a green oasis in the middle of the modern Santa Clara Valley.

Re-purposed lumber was used by Sarah’s carpenters to build new bathroom walls in the Crystal Bedroom Suite.

Home Is Where the Horror Is: 10 House-Themed Scary Movies to Watch This Halloween

Creaky stairs. Cobweb strewn attics too scary to enter. Dank basements with hidden passages. Some of the creepiest settings in the history of cinema are also the most intimate. We’re talking, of course, about homes. There have been house-themed scary movies since the dawn of the horror genre, and with good reason: Home is where we first learn the meaning of fear.

With Halloween right around the corner, we’ve put together a list of some of our favorite house-themed scary movies for your next horror movie marathon.

1. Winchester (2018)

Accuse of bias all you want, but we guarantee you’ll be singing a different tune once you get a load of “Winchester.” A silver-screen adaptation of Sarah Winchester’s life, “Winchester” is about one woman’s encounter with a supernatural evil that occupies her home. Starring Helen Mirren, “Winchester” is the ideal way to kick off a scary movie marathon.

Have your own spine-tingling night at the Winchester Mystery House when you visit our haunted attraction, Unhinged: Housewarming. Tickets on sale now!

2. The Shining (1980)

The Overlook Hotel isn’t technically a house. But it is one of the eeriest settings of all time. The geometric carpet. The epic garden maze. The uncountable hallways and rooms where spirits and ghouls wait to terrorize the Torrance family. The enormous, spooky hotel looks how insanity feels. That’s why the iconic Stanley Kubrick film makes our list.

3. Barbarian (2022)

The history of a house collides violently with the present in gory, tension-filled fashion. The brilliance of “Barbarian” is its ability to tie your stomach knots by subverting your expectations. The jump scares don’t always come when you think they will, but you’ll feel a breathless terror all the same.

4. House on Haunted Hill (1999)

An amusement park tycoon invites a group of strangers to stay overnight in an abandoned asylum and promises a $1 million prize to those that can make it through the night. The contestants in the macabre game question what’s real and what’s a stunt until the answer becomes frighteningly real.

5. House of Usher (1960)

Get ready for old school creeps galore in this Vincent Price adaptation of a story by Edgar Allan Poe. When Philip Winthrop visits his fiance, he discovers she has an eerie, overbearing brother and an unsettling family secret that threatens to keep them apart.

6. The Amityville Horror (1979)

Based on a true story, “The Amityville Horror” tells the bone-chilling tale of a family man who becomes possessed by a malevolent spirit after moving into a home in an idyllic New York neighborhood.

“The Amityville Horror” is packed with disturbing imagery including a pair of demonic red eyes outside of a second-story bedroom window and blood pouring from walls. No wonder it’s been a scary movie marathon favorite for over 40 years.

7. Paranormal Activity (2007)

Question: What’s the only thing scarier than a ghost you can see?

Answer: A ghost you can’t see.

That’s what you get with “Paranormal Activity,” a modern fright-fest that tells the story of Katie and Micah, a couple tormented by a demonic presence in their suburban home. Part of what makes this scary movie so compelling is it was shot on a home video camera. The raw, realistic presentation is so gripping you can’t look away.

8. Poltergeist (1982)

“They’re heeeere.”

Those two words set off a whirlwind of ghastly frights for Carol Anne and the rest of the Freeling family. This 1980s horror classic will have you making sure you don’t go to sleep with the TV on and wondering what’s buried under your house.

9. Rose Red (2002)

Loosely based on the Winchester Mystery House, Stephen King’s “Rose Red” tells the tragic tale of an abandoned mansion. In this miniseries, a professor leads a team of psychic investigators to solve the violent mysteries of the old house, but they end up finding more than they bargained for.

10. The Conjuring (2013)

Who can forget seeing Lily Taylor’s terrified Carolyn Perron desperately grasping a door jamb as an evil entity drags her across the floor? We certainly can’t. Based on a true story, “The Conjuring” is full of paranormal scares and creepy images you won’t soon forget.

These house-themed scary movies will have you staying out of the basement all spooky season long. Don’t forget to visit our house of horrors: Buy your ticket to Unhinged: Housewarming today!

The Frights of Yesteryear: Halloween in the 1920s

Can you feel the eerie in the air? Halloween is approaching. Before you celebrate the holiday by getting your scare on at Unhinged: Housewarming, our immersive haunted attraction set during Prohibition, prepare yourself for nostalgic frights by reading what a 1920s Halloween was really like.

The Parties

Even without cocktails flowing, Prohibition Era Halloween parties packed a punch. Spooky celebrations got a whole lot more festive thanks to the Beistle Company, which launched its line of Halloween decor in 1920. Especially popular were the company’s cutouts of skeletons, witches, and black cats, which still hang in windows and on walls every October. These novelties helped Halloween party hosts create a party atmosphere that was equal parts frightening and fun.

The 1920s also produced its share of Halloween songs. Brassy, big band tunes like Jack Hylton’s “Bogey Wail” and stripped down, mournful little earworms like Helen Gross & the Kansas City Five’s “Undertaker’s Blues” were the soundtrack of the 1920s Halloween party. Friends, neighbors, and partners danced the night away to scary stories set to swinging music and sang along to macabre melodies about ghosts, goblins, and devils.

No 1920s Halloween party was complete without playing games. One popular pastime was pumpkin ring toss, where competitors tried to throw a ring – usually made of rope – around a pumpkin. Another 1920s classic lives on to this day: Bobbing for apples was the go-to party game. In some areas of the country, the old school version of apple bobbing comes with a romantic twist: Women marked the apples in different ways, and if a man caught a woman’s marked apple, they were destined to be a match.

The Costumes

1920s Halloween costumes are a far cry from their modern counterparts. For starters, they were homemade, as manufactured costumes didn’t hit the market for another decade. Many costumes were made from aprons or sheets (think the classic ghost costume) and were often the loving handiwork of resourceful parents. That’s not the only way Prohibition Era costumes differ from today’s mass-produced versions.

These days, trick-or-treaters and Halloween party-goers often dress up as someone or something specific. It might be your favorite superhero, a celebrity, a nod to a pop culture phenomenon, or a historical figure like Sarah Winchester. This was not necessarily the case in the 1920s, as the focus was more on concealing one’s identity than inhabiting a particular character. People dressed up as witches, clowns, animals, and whatever monsters they could craft with their own able hands.

The Mischief

Halloween and pranks go hand-in-hand. But by 1920s standards, today’s Halloween mischief is child’s play. Rather than toilet-papering trees or egging houses, the pranksters of yesteryear stole gates, put people’s wagons on their roofs, whacked unsuspecting victims with sacks of flour, and broke windows. The vandalism eventually got so out of hand in some places it was illegal to wear a mask to the local Halloween parade.

The uptick in destruction coincided with the rise of trick-or-treating. Unlike today, saying the phrase “trick or treat” wasn’t a Halloween ritual, it was an ultimatum; it was a quid pro quo. Either a person “treated” the masked person at their door – often with cookies, nuts, or toys – or they made themselves vulnerable to a “trick.”

We think we speak for everyone when we say we’re glad those days are behind us.

Disney's Haunted Mansion and More: Winchester Mystery House's Influence on Pop Culture

The movie world is buzzing about the just released “Haunted Mansion” movie. With an ensemble cast including silver screen all-stars LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, and Owen Wilson, “Haunted Mansion” is poised to be Disney’s latest summer blockbuster.

While even casual Disney fans know the movie is based on the storied attraction, most people don’t know that the Haunted Mansion ride was inspired in part by the Winchester Mystery House. But the most anticipated movie of the summer isn’t the first film influenced by the Winchester. Far from it.

Grab your popcorn and silence your cell phones –  let’s take a look at the Winchester Mystery House’s connection to the movies.

The Haunted Mansion

Though it didn’t open until long after the park opened its doors, plans for the Haunted Mansion actually pre-date the construction of the original Disneyland. Opened in 1969, the original idea for the attraction was typical of your standard haunted house: The exterior was to be spooky and unwelcoming – designed to send chills down one’s spine. But Walt Disney himself nixed the notion of building a shabby scarefest in his park. After a visit to the Winchester Mystery House, Disney had a new direction for his Imagineers: Like the Winchester, the Haunted Mansion would be fancy on the outside and frightening on the inside.

Several features of the Winchester have starrings in the Haunted Mansion ride, including the Seance Room, stairs that make a circular path, and the repeated numerology of the number thirteen. So when you see these architectural oddities on the big screen or the next time you hop in a “doom buggy” and tour the Haunted Mansion at a Disney park, know that the thrills you feel were first inspired by the Winchester.

Winchester

The legends surrounding Sarah Winchester and the Winchester Mystery House have garnered the attention of Hollywood in their own right. The allure of Sarah’s life story is evident. It has everything: wealth, loss, the specter of spirits. Talk about drama.

It’s little wonder, then, that in 2018 directors Michael and Peter Spierig brought Sarah’s story to theaters with “Winchester.” Starring Helen Mirren in the title role, Jason Clarke, and Sarah Snook, the film tells the disturbing story of a woman haunted by a malevolent spirit. Mirren even toured the Winchester Mystery House while conducting immersive research for the role.

We’ll never know how much of “Winchester” is based in fact and how much of it is movie magic. And that’s what makes the story so compelling.

Watch the Winchester trailer here.

Photo Credit: Stephen King's Rose Red 2002

Rose Red

Technically, “Rose Red” isn’t a movie, but a Stephen King TV miniseries is definitely worthy of inclusion on this list. Airing on ABC in 2002, the three-part scream centers on a haunted mansion with a history of violent, often inexplicable, tragedies. Part of the fictional mansion’s history is ownership by a wealthy heiress who obsessively adds to her home following her husband’s death, a clear parallel to the story of Sarah Winchester.

But you don’t have to take our word for it. King, America’s long-standing master of horror, has been open about drawing inspiration for the story from the Winchester Mystery House.

See Stephen King talk about the inspiration taking from Winchester Mystery House for Rose Red here.

Winchester Mystery House’s Continued Influence on the Movies

It’s impossible to say how much influence the Winchester Mystery House has had on movies. American cinema is filled with stories of haunted mansions inhabited by reclusive women in black dresses terrorized by things that go bump in the night. In almost all of them, you can see a glimpse of Sarah Winchester and the Winchester Mystery House.

Tis' The Spirited Holiday Season

SAN JOSE (November 3, 2022)—Today, Winchester Mystery House announced the lineup of special events that will take place throughout the holiday season. Tickets for all events are available now at winchestermysteryhouse.com.

“The holidays are a very special time at Winchester Mystery House,” said General Manager Walter Magnuson. “Many people don’t realize that during Sarah Winchester’s lifetime, the spookiest day of the year was actually Christmas Eve. Families and neighbors would gather around the fire in shadow filled story circles to hear tales of specters and the supernatural.  We hope that our guests make a visit to the Winchester Mystery House part of their holiday tradition.”

Built during the Victorian era, Sarah Winchester’s eccentric house is a sight to behold any time of year, but it’s especially inspiring during the holidays. From November 25, 2022 through January 1, 2023, Winchester Mystery House will present daily mansion tours developed specifically for the holiday season. Guests will be treated to a sprinkling of Victorian holiday traditions, beautiful décor, festive music, and more.

Step back in time to a Victorian Christmas with the “Holidays with the Historian” tour. Led by Janan Boehme, Winchester Mystery Houses’ historian and Victorian customs expert, this special tour of the mansion includes Victorian holiday traditions, caroling and a special holiday treat in the Venetian Dining Room. Victorian attire is encouraged. Holidays with the Historian will take place on Saturday December 3; Saturday, December 10; and Saturday, December 17 at 5:30 pm.

Don’t be ordinary! Stuff those stockings with strangeness and wrap something weird they won’t forget! On Saturday, December 3 and Sunday, December 4 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Winchester Mystery House will host the 4th Annual Menagerie Holiday Oddities & Curiosities Market. Nobody does winter holidays, the occult, and oddities like the Victorians. Featuring vendors selling strangely unique collectibles, antiques, and handmade wares—from bugs, bones, and taxidermy to dark art, medical specimens, and natural science—the Menagerie Holiday Oddities & Curiosities Market is the San Francisco Bay Area’s official Oddities & Curiosities event. While on-site, guests are invited to experience self-guided tours through the ghostly corridors of the Winchester Mystery House, as well as other family-friendly activities, before or after the market.

“The Menagerie Oddities Market is so excited to bring our market to San Jose and the Winchester Mystery House for the first time,” said Connstance Garcia, co-owner of the Menagerie Oddities Market. “The bizarre beauty of the Winchester Estate is a perfect match to our event making this one of the most strange and unique shopping experiences of the season.”

Master magician and acclaimed apparitionist Aiden Sinclair (“America’s Got Talent,” “Penn & Teller Fool Us”) returns to Winchester Mystery House with Aiden Sinclair’s Ghost of Christmas Passed, an interactive evening of paranormal illusions. Once upon a time, Christmas was more than a celebration of giving. It was a time that families gathered and when the night grew darkest, chilling tales were told. Aiden Sinclair rekindles the tradition of Dickens in a haunting presentation that brings the Christmas Ghost Stories of long ago back to haunt the living! Will you dare join and see what dark gifts he has in store? This show is story-driven and intended for mature audiences. Children under the age of 13 will not be admitted without express special permission from the performer. This production is presented in the Carriage House of the Winchester Mystery House. Performances take place on Thursday, December 29 and Friday, December 30 at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets are $54.99.

Winchester Mystery House is an official drop-off location for Toys For Tots. All guests who bring a new, unwrapped toy for donation will receive 15% off at the box office on all tours. Donations will be accepted from November 25–December 20, 2022.

In anticipation of the impending Centennial anniversary, Winchester Mystery House announced today a host of exhibitions, programs, and events—including a one-of-a-kind 100th birthday celebration in June 2023—throughout 2022–2023.

“We are so proud to have been given the opportunity to be the caretakers of Sarah Winchester’s home for the past 100 years,” said Winchester Mystery House General Manager Walter Magnuson. “The Centennial is an opportunity to not only celebrate the world-famous house, but to honor Sarah’s incredible legacy. The Winchester Mystery House has fascinated and inspired millions since doors opened to the public in 1923, and it is our mission to keep the house open for future generations to enjoy.”

On September 5, 2022, exactly 100 years since Sarah Winchester—heiress to the Winchester Repeating Arms fortune—passed away at home in her bizarrely beautiful mansion, Winchester Mystery House will welcome guests to a Celebration of Life for Sarah Winchester. Tours open at 10 a.m. and all ticketed guests will receive a commemorative cabinet card and will be encouraged to leave flowers, cards, photos, and mementos in the front gardens that day. (Note: No open flames are allowed). At 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. that evening, Winchester Mystery Houses invites guests to Beyond the Veil, a supernatural event hosted by world-renowned psychic medium James Van Praagh. On this hallowed occasion, 25 special guests will join James as he walks the halls of Sarah’s home and attempts to connect with Sarah and the spirits that still call the Winchester Estate home. Tickets ($250) are on-sale now at winchestermysteryhouse.com.

Following a two-year hiatus, Winchester Mystery House announced today that its popular immersive Halloween show will return this fall with an entirely new chapter, Unhinged: Nightshade’s Curse. In conjunction with the Centennial celebration, Winchester Mystery House has launched Walk with Spirits, an all-new intimate and interactive tour experience focused on spiritualism and paranormal. Tour guests start their journey to the past through the front doors and into a Victorian wake in the front parlor of the home. There a tour guide will guide them through the more macabre traditions of death and mourning in the 19th century. Guests will then proceed to the upper floors of the mansion where they hear about the actively practicing Spiritualists in the Santa Clara Valley during the late 1880s before experiencing the sights and sounds of a Victorian séance. Guests will then be led through a series of dark and foreboding spaces, hearing tales of the supernatural and spiritual phenomenon that Winchester Mystery House guests and employees have recorded over the years. Finally, they will arrive in the basement, the very foundation of the house. If they are lucky, or perhaps unlucky, guests may have an interaction with the mansion’s most famous residents. Tickets for the Walk with Spirits Tour are available now at winchestermysteryhouse.com.
